Ginger is an aromatic rhizome.
It grow both in tropical and sub-tropical climate. It is grown in
India, Jamaica, Nigeria, Sierra, Leone, Brazil, China, Japan and
Indonesia.
General
It is herbaceous, perennial
belong to Zingiberaceae. It is propagated through rhizomes, the
rhizomes put forth erect, leafy stem 30-90 cm long narrow,
lanceolate with a prominent mid rib. When plants are about 9 month
the green leaves turn yellow.
It is quick growing reedy
perennial with narrow, bright green, glossy leaves, yup to 25 cm
long, yellowish flowers grown for its rhizomatons. The plant height
90 x 40 cm. The rhizomes buds are planted about 15 - 20 cm apart. 2
- 3 cm below the surface in a fertile, well drained soil mixed with
compost. The plant needs a Sunny sheltered position with moist soil,
the stalk are well developed then watered heavily. Rhizomes
harvested in 9-10 th months. Mostly attacks by nematodes
and Fusarium.
The pungent odors and flavors
are due to compound name methylallyl disulphide present in the
ginger.
